NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL OF PROFESSIONAL GEOLOGISTS

Geology Days Field Trip 1

Tuesday November 14

Walls of the Museum: Reconstructing Ancient New York

with Rocks and Fossils older than the “Age of Dinosaurs”

Trip Leader Leader: Ed Landing

This Field Trip is approved for 2 PDH
(Runs concurrent to the afternoon Technical Sessions)

You don’t always have to take students into rural settings to teach them geology. Indeed, deep insights into geological processes and geological histories are available in everyday building and ornamental stone. While a TA, I had students do self-directed field work by sending them to various addresses in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where they could inspect rocks of all ages and of many types from high grade metamorphics and grantitic intrusives of the Proterozoic of northern Wisconsin to sedimentary Triassic “brown stone” from central Connecticut.

Join NYSCPG and Ed Landing in the reconstruction of the ancient (late Middle Devonian) Acadian Mountain building interval by use sedimentary structures and fossils preserved on "Llenroc stone" used for building facing on the N.Y.S. Museum, Albany, NY.

Transportation and lunch will be included. A coach bus will transport attendees from the hotel to Albany, NY to the NYS Museum at 12:00 PM, arriving around 1PM. Following  Dr. Landing's Presentation, we will return to the hotel, arriving around 4PM. While this trip will be during Geology Days presentations, it will provide PDH credits comparable to those that would be received otherwise.

Note: You must be registered for Geology Days 2023 in order to partake in this field trip. There are a limited number of seats, please register as soon as possible if you are interested. If you register for this event without being registered for Geology Days, you will be de-registered, and if your ticket will be refunded.

NYSCPG is the principal organization of professional geologists responsible for the advancement of the competent and ethical practice of geology in New York State.
