Title: How and Why to Apply for Your New York State PG License

The New York State Council of Professional Geologists (NYSCPG) was founded in September 1995 for the greater good of Geologists in New York State.  NYSCPG’s primary missions are to strengthen and advance the geological sciences as a profession; promote the protection of public welfare and the environment through the professional practice of Geology; and promote the legal standing of geologists through licensing.

After more than 17 years of lobbying for licensure, and numerous discussions and negotiations with related professions, NYSCPG has accomplished its main mission, “promote the legal standing of Geologists” in New York State! The NYSCPG is now focusing on its other missions, most importantly, advocating and educating on behalf of the profession.  This presentation will help you understand the importance of licensure, understand the future of NYSCPG and how that may affect you and your place of business, and more importantly, it will help guide you through the application process. Topics that will be covered include: who needs to be licensed, individual licensees vs. corporate practice; deadlines and important dates; applying for licensure during the “grandparenting” period; applying under the various paths of endorsement (ASBOG exam), or the experience and/or education route; what constitutes the “practice” of geology vs. non-geologic duties; and documenting your geologic experience to the State Education Department (SED); and common FAQs and where to find more information.  So, hold you head up high and get ready to apply!
